Dans ce livre, Charles W. SCHEEL aborde tout ce qu’il faut savoir sur l'émergence des notions de réalisme magique et de réel merveilleux : comment le Magischer Realismus est apparu en Allemagne sous la plume de Franz Roh, en 1925, puis l’incroyable postérité qui fut la sienne en Amérique Latine dans les années 1960 avec les auteurs du boom hispano-américain.

Ainsi, Charles W. SCHEEL propose à la fois un panorama historique et critique très détaillé sur cette question d’habitude expédiée sous l’angle thématique, approche qui, comme on le sait, s’avère être, en définitive, assez peu opératoire. Or, là où cet ouvrage réalise véritablement un tour de force, c’est qu’il parvient à dépasser cette limitation en introduisant des approches plus structuralistes comme celle de la Brésilienne Irlemar Chiampi, ou encore celle, narratologique, de la Canadienne Amaryll Chanady, étude qui a permis d’approfondir et de renouveler complètement la compréhension de ce genre d’écriture et de mieux en cerner les tenants et les aboutissants dans l’écriture romanesque.

Dans la seconde partie du livre, consacrée aux poétiques, cette approche comparatiste trouve à s’illustrer d’une manière tout à fait éclairante, par l’analyse de textes de Marcel Aymé et de Gabriel García Márquez, ainsi que dans les romans de Jean Giono, d’Alejo Carpentier, Jacques Stephen Alexis et du martiniquais Jean-Louis Baghio’o, avec, en bouquet final, un commentaire très éclairant du Hameau de William Faulkner.

Charles W. SCHEEL offers a very detailed historical and critical panorama of this matter, which is usually approached from a thematic point of view, which, as we know, is seldom convincing. Where this book achieves a real tour de force is that it succeeds in pushing back limits by introducing structuralist and semantic approaches like the one of the Brazilian Irlemar Chiampi, or the narratological one of the Canadian Amaryll Chanady, which have allowed to go deeper and to renew completely our understanding of this kind of writing, and to better define the ins and outs of the question of novelistic voices.

In the book's second part on poetics, this comparative theoretical approach is particularly well illustrated by analyses of texts of Marcel Aymé and Gabriel García Márquez, as well as novels by Jean Giono, Alejo Carpentier, Jacques Stephen Alexis and Jean-Louis Baghio’o—born in Martinique—and, as a finale, a very enlighting commentary of The Hamlet by William Faulkner.
